Theater in Nagoya in English with Japanese subtitles?!

16 16America/Sao_Paulo March 16America/Sao_Paulo 2023

On 04/16/2023, Spring School and its students visited the Sasashima Studio performance house for an incredible play in English, but believe me, the play had subtitles in Japanese on a screen projected on the stage.

March 16, 2023, a typical day at Spring School, but an atypical day for some “Springers”! That day we gathered 18 Springers, including teachers and students, to appreciate one of the noblest arts that exists, the theater. Such an ancient art but unfortunately still very unknown to many. For many of those present, it was the first time they had seen a theater play, and in English!

That day we watched three acts by Edward Abbe, a playwright who addresses the dark side of society like no one else. Albee's shows are complex and there's a lot of humor in the wordplay.

Edward Albee is one of America's most esteemed playwrights. He is a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner and is perhaps best known for his Broadway hit Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

Albee was a prolific writer and rose to prominence in the New York theater scene. His first success as a playwright was with his 1959 one-act show "The Zoo Story". Fans and scholars of Albee have suggested that his power as a writer is most strongly felt in his short one-act shows.

“The Nagoya Players”, a group of actors from Nagoya, annually brings several theater plays. And last weekend's performance was no different. "The Nagoya players" whose slogan is "fostering the next generation" has solidified its name in our territory and has masterfully achieved this through incredible plays with actors of different nationalities united through the two most important languages in Japan.

This weekend's show was held in an intimate black box environment where audiences can really feel the energy and emotions of the characters.
Some of the city's best acting talent were brought together to put together this show.

In the same way that Nagoya Players has been promoting culture and language learning, our PURPOSE is to make Springer students have unique experiences, and this is achieved, without a doubt, by “leaving the box to learn”.

It sure was a great “exchange” for everyone. Theater does that, it leaves us reflective, with a flea behind our ear. Whether it's because of a new word or expression we've learned or the message we've managed to understand, going to the theater will always be an experience where you won't leave "empty handed".

And as we couldn't miss it, we left the theater and went to dinner and the chosen place was Shooters, an American-style restaurant that has incredible food, impeccable service and you can practice your English there too!

And that was it! This is how we do it at Spring!

By the way, for those who want to go deeper into the art, Spring will be bringing on May 5th, a theater workshop with actress graduated in Brazil Lizza Inoue.
Also keep an eye out for upcoming events!!! We will have: Cosplay party, Undokai (on the beach) and the theater workshop!! Do not lose!!

Yes, we are unstoppable!!🤩 Opportunities here you have! Just allow yourself and SPRING YOUR LIFE
